1st Hole.
The 1st Hole at Castleknock Golf Club is a short but tricky opening par 4. At 312 yards from the back tee the green is within reach for the longer hitters, setting up a fast start to your round. The ideal Tee-shot for the average hitter would be to place the ball to the right side of the fairway, avoiding the lake down the left. This will provide you with the best angle to attack this green using only a short to medium iron.
2nd Hole.
The 2nd hole measuring 591 yards off the back tee is a three shot par 5 even for the longest hitters. Unlike the 1st hole where you can ease your way into the round using an iron off the tee and a short iron to the green, on this par 5 you'll have to hit two of your "Sunday Best" to get within range of the green to use your scoring clubs. The ideal line off the tee is straight at the big tree in the middle of the fairway, but you need to be aware of the bunkers that line the right hand side of the fairway and the Out of Bounds that stretches down the entire left hand side of the hole. With your 2nd shot favour the right side of the fairway as this will open up a green which is heavily guarded by bunkers for your 3rd.
3rd Hole.
The 1st and at 219 yards the longest par 3 on the golf course, a par on this hole is always a great score. The ideal shot is to the left side of the green as the ball will filter back to the middle, if you are going to miss the green miss short and left as this will give you best chance of making par.
4th Hole.
When standing on the tee the first things you'll notice are the bunkers on the left and right hand side of the fairway. The ideal line is to favour the right half of the fairway, just in side the fairway bunker on the right. This will leave you with a 2nd shot to a green partly hidden behind a mound with two deep bunkers, if you are going to miss the green there is plenty of room to the left of the bunkers as this will give you a good chance of making par.
5th Hole.
Index 18 and the shortest par 4 on the golf course, at 307 yards from the back tee this hole is within range for the longer hitters setting up the chance for a birdie or better. For the average hitter the ideal tee-shot is a long iron or fairway wood to the right half of the fairway, leaving yourself a full wedge shot to a green that not only slopes from front to back but is very shallow in depth, so being able to put some spin on the ball will help set up a birdie opportunity.
6th Hole.
A par 5 and a good chance for making birdie. The line from the tee here is straight at the fairway bunker in the distance and if you are feeling brave try and draw the ball off the bunker to help get round the corner of the lake, leaving you with an iron to the green for your 2nd. From the fairway you are faced with a 2nd shot over water to a green protected by deep bunkers, you have the option of going for the green in 2 with a fairway wood or laying up to a wide landing area about 40 yards short of the green and relying on your wedge to set up your birdie attempt.
7th Hole.
Another very strong par 3, over 200 yards from the back tee with water short, left and over the back of the green. This green is also protected by deep bunkers at the front and to the left and right. The ideal line for your tee-shot is to the right half of the green as the ball will filter back to the middle, if you are going to miss this green, missing to the right is your only option as anything going left is going to be wet.
8th Hole.
Par 5, index 2 and considered by many the best hole on the golf course. Looking down the fairway from the tee, first thing you’ll notice is the huge fairway bunker down the left hand side, the ideal line is to place your drive 10 to 15 yards right of the bunker( there is more room to error right then it looks from the tee). For your 2nd you are left with a shot up hill to a fairway with bunkers on the right hand side and heavy rough on the left. For the approach shot you are playing to an elevated green protected by bunkers front and back, a par is never a bad score on this hole.
9th hole.
The first thing you’ll notice about the 9th is the huge green; the 9th shares the green with the 18th and is overlooked by the fabulos clubhouse in the background. The green is protected by a lake in front and a deep bunker to the right and requires a solid shot with a mid iron to set up your par or birdie.
10th Hole.
The back 9 opens up with a tight par 5 with Out of Bounds stretching down the entire right hand side of the hole and a lake catching drives that stray too far left. The ideal line is to place your drive just left of the fairway bunker. Facing you for your second shot is a green with water to the left and a stream running in front of it, your best option is to hit a mid to long iron short of the stream and rely on your wedge to set up your birdie opportunity.
11th Hole.
One of the most beautiful par three's you'll find anywhere, the green is surrounded by water and the rock finish to the front of the green not only adds to the beauty of the hole but also makes the tee-shot more daunting. The tee-shot requires steady nerves and a nice solid mid iron to the heart of the green, there is a bail out area to the left of the green for those of you not quite feeling up to the challenge.
12th Hole.
The ideal line is to place your tee-shot in the left half of the fairway (fading the ball off the 2nd fairway bunker on the left), this will leave you with a second shot with a mid iron to a green protected by bunkers to the left, right and over the back, if the flag is at the back of the green play your 2nd shot to be short because anything big will leave a tricky up and down.
13th Hole.
Another short par 4 with a very tricky green as it slopes severly from front to back. The ideal tee-shot is to hit a long iron or fairway wood, leaving you a full wedge shot to the green to hopefully set up a birdie opportunity.
14th Hole.
A long par 4 that generally plays into the prevailing wind, requiring two big hits to get home, you would take par on this hole any day. The ideal line is to place your drive between the two sets of fairway bunkers, leaving you with a 2nd shot to a green protected by bunkers to the front left and right. The green slopes from right to left so keep that in mind when playing your 2nd shot.
15th Hole.
Another pretty looking hole with a water hazard that stretches up the right hand side of the hole with a big pot bunker up the left. The line for your drive is just inside the fairway bunker on the left, this will open up a green which is protected by deep bunkers at the front and to the left.
16th Hole.
The last of the par five's and is within range in 2 for the longer hitters. From the tee the ideal line is to place your drive between the bunkers that line either side of the fairway. From here you have the option of going for a green surrounded by bunkers in two or laying up to a wide landing area short of the green and relying on your wedge to set up your birdie.
17th Hole.
Index 1, the hardest hole on the course with a green to match, not only is the green protected by an Ash tree in front and deep bunkers left and right but the green itself is very undulating leaving you with a tricky 2 putt no matter how close you get to the flag. The ideal line off the tee is to place your drive between the 2 bunkers that are situated to the left and right of the fairway, leaving you with a 2nd shot to this tough green.
18th Hole.
The 18th hole and with thoughts of the 19th entering your mind, you must first overcome a 197 yard par 3 with a green protected by water in front and to the right, with deep bunkers waiting for any shot going over the back. The best way to play this hole is to hit your tee-shot towards the left edge of the green and let the contours feed the ball from left to right towards the flag.
